Obituary for Brandon Vaughan Madden

Brandon Vaughan Madden, of Columbia and Pawleys Island, died in Columbia on September 11. She was 83.
Mrs. Madden was born April 15, 1934 in Roxboro, NC. She was the daughter of Celina McGregor Vaughan and James Alexander Vaughan. Brandy grew up in Columbia and met her one and true love, Arthur Madden, there. She studied at Converse College and was graduated from the University of South Carolina. She also studied at The Johns Hopkins University while her husband was in medical school.
Brandy married Arthur on June 8, 1956. They moved to Baltimore for Arthur to attend medical school. Then they moved to Atlanta, so he could finish training. After all the trials and tribulations of being broke students, they moved to Norfolk where Arthur served on active duty in the Navy. They lived there just before and during the Cuban missile crisis, and it was a trying time for a young mother of two.
A good thing came out of that crisis. Afterwards, her husband was deployed on a Show the Flag tour in the Mediterranean, and Brandy was able to travel through the Mediterranean, shadowing the fleet. She and her husband had a blast together. The two children had been left at grandmother’s house--of course. Many years later after her husband’s death, she was able to tour the Mediterranean again. She visited many of the small towns and cities she had been to before and, again, she had a blast. She did enjoy life!
She, Arthur, and the children moved back to Atlanta for two years and then moved to Columbia. As the children, now four of them, left the nest, Brandy spent more time at Pawleys Island, probably her most favorite place on earth. She was a member of The Assembly. She was also a member of Holy Cross Faith Memorial Episcopal Church, Pawleys Island and also attended Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, Columbia.
Brandy was the best mom and she loved her family dearly, especially her grandchildren. She loved to spoil her grandchildren. She loved the beach and her wild birds; she was quite a lucky lady in so many ways.
She is survived by her four children: Helen Hefner Madden, Arthur Allen Madden, Jr., Brandon Vaughan Madden, James Emmett Madden and his wife Suzy; 4 grandchildren: Kelley, Arthur, McGregor, and Emmett; her nephew, James Vaughan, was especially dear to her. She is predeceased by her husband, Arthur Allen Madden, and her brother, James Alexander Vaughan.
Brandy Madden’s children are hopeful that heaven is full of beautiful birds and no squirrels. Heaven indeed.
A graveside service is planned for October 7, 11:30 a.m. at All Saints Church Cemetery, Pawleys Island. Anyone who loved our Mom is welcome to come and celebrate her life with us.
