Obituary for Roddey Cobb Bell

Roddey Cobb Bell, twin son of the late Mary Louise Hinson Bell and the late Reverend Curtis O’Dell Bell, was born in July 26, 1934 in North Augusta, South Carolina. His father was the minister at the Warrenville Methodist Church at the time. He married Ruth Benn Oliver of Georgetown in 1956 and has two daughters, Martha Louise Bell Smith and husband, Thornton Sidney Smith of Columbia, and Mary Ruth Bell Wall and husband, Timothy Alex Wall of Georgetown. He has five grandchildren: Wesley Alex Wall (TK), Roddey Benn Smith (Hollie), Lawson Sidney Smith, Jacobb Timothy Wall (Carson), and Christine Elizabeth Wall and two great grandchildren, Wynter Elizabeth Wall and Lawson Starnes Wall. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Cornelia Riser Bell of Spartanburg, nephews, Jeffery Curtis Bell (Janelle) and Ryan Riser Bell, niece-in-law, Marla Bell and their families as well as many other cousins. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his brother, Curtis Porter Bell and nephew, Stephen Hinson Bell.
He attended schools in Laurens, Greenville, and graduated from Winyah High School in Georgetown in 1952. He received a BS degree from Wofford College in 1956 and attended graduate school at the University of South Carolina. As a child, he was a Boy Scout and received the Eagle Scout Award while living in Greenville.
He was a Certified Public Accountant. Before returning to Georgetown to open a CPA firm, he held accounting positions in Greenville, Seneca, Columbia, and Myrtle Beach. He later became the Finance Director for the City of Georgetown serving from 1983 until his retirement in 1994
He was most recently a communicant of Prince George Winyah Church, served on the Vestry, President of the Men's Club, Sunday School Teacher and Church Treasurer. After his retirement he served as a docent for the church.
He was a member of the Winyah Indigo Society, member of the Georgetown Cotillon (past president, secretary and treasurer), past member of the Rotary Club of Georgetown, past member of the Ribbon Club, member of the Georgetown Historical Society and Museum, the Rice Museum, past member of the Propeller Club, Lifetime member of the Friends of the Library, member of the Battery White Sons of Confederate Veterans, and a past member of the Carolina First Bank Board.
In Greenville, he was treasurer of the Jaycees, a member of the Sertoma Club and the Revellers Dance Club. He was also the Sunday School Superintendent of Morningside Methodist Church.
In Seneca, he served as president of the Jaycees and a charter member of the Sertoma Club. He was also treasurer and advisor for the youth group at the Seneca Methodist Church.
In Myrtle Beach, he was a member of the Rotary Club and a communicant of Trinity Episcopal Church.
Funeral Services will be eleven o’clock Monday, September 3, 2018, at Prince George Winyah Episcopal Church. Officiating will be The Very Rev. David Thurlow. Burial will follow in the Churchyard. A reception will immediately follow the burial in the Church Parrish Hall.
