Obituary

Georgetown: Alfred Benjamin Schooler, 87, died Friday, March 9, 2012, at Tidelands Community Hospice House. Mr. Schooler was born in Georgetown on May 19, 1924, a son of the late Benjamin Harrison "Harry" Schooler and Mary Emily Hemingway Schooler. He was raised by his uncle and aunt, the late Norton and Janie Watts. Mr. Schooler was a graduate of Winyah High School and the University of S.C. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Mr. Schooler was a member of Georgetown County Council for over 38 years and served as Chairman for over 25 years. He also served on the Waccamaw Regional Planning Council for over 25 years and was a past Chairman. Mr. Schooler was the owner of Schooler Glidden Paint Store. Mr. Schooler was a member of the National Association of County Officials. He was a member of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, where he served as an usher and member of the Francis Asbury Sunday school class. Mr. Schooler was also a former Georgetown Jaycee and member of the Winyah Indigo Society and The Ribbon Club. Surviving are: his wife, Lois Inman Schooler of Georgetown; three sons, Eddie Schooler (Lynn) of Columbia, Ben Schooler (Debra) of Eastover, and Ray Schooler of Columbia; a daughter, Mary Ann S. Owens (Kevin) of Pleasant Hill; six grandchildren, Katie Schooler, John Schooler (Cheryl), William Schooler, Matthew Owens, Jeremy Owens, and Carrie Owens; a brother, Dr. Charles Schooler (Pat) of Pawleys Island; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at two o'clock on Sunday afternoon, March 11, 2012, at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. G. Edward Usher. Burial will follow at Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Saturday evening, March 10, 2012, at the Georgetown Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home from five until seven o'clock.
