Pawleys Island: Alberta Lachicotte Quattlebaum,89, widow of Jesse Clifton Quattlebaum, died Saturday, December 30, 2017. Funeral services will be eleven o'clock Friday morning, January 5, 2018 in All Saints Church. Burial will follow in All Saints Church Cemetery. A family gathering will follow at Christ The King Grace Church Waccamaw. Alberta was born in Sumter, the daughter of the late Arthur Herbert Lachicotte, Sr. and Virginia Wilson Lachicotte. She grew up on Waverly Plantation at Pawleys Island, graduated from Winyah High School in Georgetown, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Winthrop College. She later received a Master of Arts degree from The Citadel. Mrs. Quattlebaum was a former reporter for the Lancaster News in Lancaster and The Post and Courier in Charleston. She also worked as parish secretary of St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Charleston for over seven years and taught at East Cooper School in Mt. Pleasant for ten years. Alberta is survived by: her daughter, Rebecca Q. Blanton (Michael) of Charleston; two grandchildren; Wilson C. Blanton and Morgan E. Blanton; and a brother, Arthur Herbert "Doc" Lachicotte, Jr. (Martha) of Pawleys Island. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by: a sister, Elizabeth L. Middleton. Alberta was a noted historian and wrote Georgetown Rice Plantations and a second book titled Rebel Senator. She also was co-editor of an updated history of All Saints Church, and also an informational brochure of St. Michaels Church in Charleston. She truly loved the history of Georgetown County and was actively involved in preserving it for her entire life. Mrs. Quattlebaum served as a member of the editorial board of the South Carolina Historical Society Magazine, Georgetown County Library Board, and the Georgetown Rice Museum Board of Directors. Coastal Carolina University honored her, May 9, 1998, with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree in recognition for her achievements. She taught a class at Brookgreen Gardens about the area plantations. Each class ended with a boat journey of these plantations, so her students could see them from the river. Alberta also served on the Vestry of All Saints Church and the Episcopal Church Women of All Saints Church. She was active in the National Society of the Colonial Dames and was instrumental in getting together an oral history of Georgetown County by interviewing many lifetime residents of the area and plantations. Alberta loved Brookgreen Gardens, music, area history, and anything about Britain. She enjoyed time with her grandchildren and was so proud of them. She loved the beach and boating on the rivers.
