Obituary

Pawleys Island: Lieutenant Commander Alice Ward Short, USN (Ret), age 97, wife of Carl W. Short passed away December 31, 2017. She was born in Newcastle, Wyoming a daughter of Earl S. Leatherman, whose trade was digging water wells and Alice W. Leatherman of Pawleys, who was born and raised at Arcadia Plantation. She attended Mercer University, Macon, Georgia and graduated from Duke University with a B.A. in nursing in 1942. In 1943 she entered the United States Navy Nurse Corps. She was stationed in Honolulu and Midway Island for one year during WWII and on troop transports off Japan and North and South Korea during the Korean Conflict. After retiring from the Navy, she lived with her husband Carl W. Short in Spain and Italy for two years where she volunteered with the Italian Department of Antiquities on Archaeological sites. In 1971 she and Carl moved to Pawleys Island where she had spent most of her childhood. She was a nurse volunteer at various blood drives and later at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, SC. She was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church most of her life and Christ the King-Grace Waccamaw Church in her later years. She was active for some years in the Women's Auxiliary and Waccamaw Garden Club. She was a member of Phi Mu National Sorority, the South Carolina Archaeological Society, the Order of the Eastern Star serving as Worthy Matron, the International Society of the Descendants of Charlemagne and the Colonial Dames XVII. She and Carl were avid travelers. After an extended trip through China in 1995, they continued to Pago Pago, American Samoa where they lived and worked for two years. They traveled to all seven continents, the last being Antarctica in 1998. She is survived by her daughter Alice Marie Graham of Pawleys Island, her sister Mary (Libby) E. Harmon of Summerville, SC, two stepdaughters, a stepson, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her daughter Martha Jane Simpson and her husband, Carl W. Short. Funeral services will be held at one o'clock Saturday afternoon, January 6, 2018, in All Saints Church (Old Chapel), 3560 Kings River Road, Pawleys Island. Officiating will be the Rev. Timothy D.
