Georgetown:
Alma Elder Maddox, 86, died Friday, January 30, 2009, at her residence.
Mrs. Maddox was born in Bel Alton, Md. on July 13, 1922, a daughter of the late Albert Leo Elder and Agnes Genevieve Hayden Elder. She grew up in Bel Alton and graduated from nurse's school at Garfield Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Washington, D. C. Mrs. Maddox moved to Georgetown in 1985.
For over forty years, Mrs. Maddox provided a service to her community through her nursing skills in various positions at Physician's Memorial Hospital in La Plata, Md. and at Medical Arts Hospital in Dallas, Tex. When recently asked what she considered to be her greatest achievement, she replied that it was her nursing career. She was well-respected by medical personnel and family for her intelligence, knowledge, and sage advice.
Know by neighbors in Georgetown as "Miss Alma", she could often be seen taking her daily walks with her dogs and talking and laughing with others, when they met. She will be missed by many.
Surviving are: a son, John A. Maddox, Jr. of Berlin, Md.; a daughter, Sheryn E. Hughes of Grapevine, Tex.; three brothers, A. Dutton Elder of La Plata, Md., Robert P. Elder of Ocean City, Md., and Alan J. Elder of Cornelius, N. C.; six sisters, Agnes E. Nash of Wichita Falls, Tex., Theresa E. Dyer and Diane E. Bowling, both of Faulkner, Md., Patricia E. Tyler of Leonardtown, Md., Sister Nancy M. Elder of Gainesville, Fla., and Amy E. Doutt of Montross, Va.
Funeral services will be ten o'clock Tuesday morning, February 3, 2009, at the Georgetown Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home. Officiating will be Sister Nancy M. Elder. Inurnment will be Private.

A viewing and wake service will take place at the funeral home on Monday evening, February 2, 2009, from five until seven.
A Celebration of Life Mass is being planned in Maryland for later in the year.
