Obituary

Andrews: Anna "Anne" Elizabeth Smith Howell, 82, widow of Roderick Dowd Howell, Sr, died, November 9, 2020 , at her residence. Mrs. Howell was born in Robeson County, NC on March 22, 1938, a daughter of the late Robert Glenn Smith and Ora Christine Gibson Smith. She graduated from Maxton High School and received an X-Ray Technician degree from Spartanburg General Hospital. After marrying Rod and moving to Andrews they owned and operated F.C. Howell and Sons. Anne was very much of an entrepreneur and business lady. She owned and operated Anne's Flowers and Gifts and RJ's Restaurant. She was one of the first founders and major supporters for Andrews Academy. So many of the students at Andrews Academy became like children of her own, she mentored to so many of these young students who love her still today. Anne was on the Andrews Memorial Cemetery committee who she devoted so many hours trying to keep up the grounds. Anne worked as an X-Ray Technician for Georgetown Memorial Hospital for many years before retiring. She was a member of the Andrews Presbyterian Church for more than fifty years, where she served on different committees. Anne was a wonderful mother, grandmother and devoted friend to everyone. Mrs. Howell was predeceased by: her parents , her husband, one son, Roderick D. "Rick" Howell, II, and two brothers; Duncan Stewart Smith and Robert Kenneth Smith. Surviving are: a son, Richard Clark Howell of Georgetown, two daughters; Sheila Anne Pender (Mark) and Anna Janette Hyrowski (Michael) both of Georgetown, one step-daughter, Deborah Gaye Howell of Laurinburg , NC, a daughter-in-law, Leslie Howell of Socatee, two brothers; James Howard Smith of Irmo, SC and William "Bill" Blue Smith of Maxton, NC, two sisters, Mary Louise Smith Sutherland of Maxton, NC and Betty Smith Hammonds of Hampstead, NC, ten grandchildren, Jesse Sawyer, Caroline Collins (Austin), Ryan Howell, Christy Howell, Larkyn Hyrowski, Cannon Howell, Gibson Howell, Ashley Pender, Carrie Mae Hyrowski and Olivia Howell. Funeral services will be eleven o'clock Wednesday, November 11, 2020, at Saw Mill Pond Vineyard, 201 S Olive St, Andrews, SC 29510. Officiating will be the Rev. Geraldine Bednego. Burial will follow in Andrews Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service on Wednesday, November 11, 2020, at Anne's Home, 617 N.
