Armatha Stevens Thompson, 87 wife of the late Fred Austin Thompson, Jr. died Thursday, June 12, 2014 in Tucson, AZ after an extended illness.
Born August 20, 1926 in Loris, SC, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin F. and Prudence A. Stevens. Armatha grew up in the small South Carolina town of Loris. On June 5, 1947, she married Fred Thompson, Jr. of Andrews, SC and spent most of her working life as a resident of York County, VA. Mrs. Thompson was employed for over 20 years as a federal employee of the U.S. Navy in Yorktown, VA and retired in 1986 to enjoy her family, friends, and garden. In 2003, after over 50 years as a resident of Virginia, Mrs. Thompson relocated to Tucson, AZ to be closer to family.
Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Charlie, Jabe, Willie, Jessie, Clarence, Joseph Landy, sisters Jessie Clyde, and Annie Mae.
Mrs. Thompson is survived by her brother Elson and four children; a daughter Sandra Kay Ramsey and her husband Ernest Ramsey of Tucson, AZ; and sons Fred Austin Thompson, III of Hagerstown, MD; David Ray Thompson of Tucson, AZ; and Jeffrey Glenn Thompson and his wife Susan Thompson of Newnan, GA. The grandchildren are Jennifer Roffinoli, Jason Roffinoli, Tanner Ramsey, Ernest Ramsey, Jr. Christi Blankman, Krystalyn Drown, Leora Thompson, Serena Kaylor, Kristin Hopkins, Jeffrey Thompson, Jr. and Todd Gori; and five great-grandchildren Jett Thompson, Skyler Thompson, Dylan Ramsey, Summer Ramsey, and Jack Drown.
The family will receive friends at the Andrews Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home, Friday evening, June 20, 2014, from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm.
Funeral services will be at eleven o'clock Saturday morning, June 21, 2014 at Spring Gulley Baptist Church, Andrews, SC. Officiating will be the Rev. Randy Zurcher. Interment will follow in the Churchyard.
