Obituary

Barbara Hodges Harrison Brandt, of Pawleys Island, SC, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on July 16th, 2016 at the Lakes at Litchfield in Pawleys Island, SC. She was the widow of Edward A. Brandt to whom she had been married for 13 years, and had been predeceased by her husband of 43 years, Matthew W. Harrison, in 1993. Born in Morgantown, WV, she was the daughter of the late Charles Edward and Florence Conant Hodges. She was graduated from Charleston (WV) High School, received her A.A. from Stephens College, Columbia, MO, and was graduated with a B.A. degree from West Virginia University, where she was a member of Delta Gamma sorority. She later earned her teaching certification from Franklin and Marshall College, Lancaster, PA. Active in the Lancaster, PA community as her children were growing up, Mrs. Brandt participated in the local PTA, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Recreation League football organizations. In addition, she served in many capacities on the boards of the Lancaster Women's Symphony Association, Lancaster Junior League, the Easter Seal Society, the Visiting Nurse Association, the Cliosophic Society, and P.E.O. and she served as president of the Landisville Hospital Auxiliary to the Lancaster General Hospital, the Lancaster Art Class, and the Delta Gamma Alumnae Association,. For many years, she taught English at Hempfield High School, first as a substitute teacher, and later as a full-time teacher. She was member of Highland Presbyterian Church, Lancaster, where she served as an Elder of the Session and as a member of the Bell Choir. Since moving to this community in 1998, she has been an active member of Pawleys Island Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Brandt was devoted to her family and loved spending time with her "progeny". She was an accomplished pianist, an avid reader, and an enthusiastic traveler, and she enjoyed playing bridge whenever she had time. Survivors are her daughter, Susan, wife of Dr. John C Dixon, Charleston, WV, her son Matthew, husband of Marta, Chagrin Falls, OH, and her son Thomas, husband of Beth, Carmel, IN, and by six grandchildren. She is survived also by 5 step-children, Edward A. Brandt, Yorktown, NY, David E. Brandt, Upper Jay, NY, F. Andrew Brandt, of Lake Placid, NY, James T. Brandt, Napa, CA, and Carole A. Brandt, Seattle, WA, and by four step-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 20th, 2016 at 1:00 PM at Pawleys Island Presbyterian Church in Pawleys Island, SC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to either Hospice of Lancaster County in Lancaster, PA or Tidelands Community Hospice in Georgetown, SC.
