Obituary

Georgetown: Annie Bertha Carter Joseph, 94, wife of the late Arthur Joseph, died August 1, 2017, at the Lakes at Litchfield. Mrs. Joseph was born on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 1923, in the Pleasant Hill Community of Georgetown County. She was the eldest daughter of the eight children of Jackson Joseph Carter and Margaret Gertrude Marsh Carter. The other siblings were Allen Levoy, Elbert, twins Dorothy and Dalmar, Carolene, Jesse Willard, and Libby. After High School, she attended Columbia Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1943 as part of the first Cadet Nurses Program during World War II. Moving home, she was a nurse at International Paper Company. She then met, and soon after married, Arthur Joseph on Christmas Day, 1946. Arthur and Bert, as she was now called, had four children; Joye Ann Deane (Dennis), Nicholas Raad (Jill), Jackson Carter, and Victoria Carolene Meredith (Allen). In addition, she is survived by loving grandchildren, Ginna Carter Taylor (Joe), Megan Deane Greer (Kyle), Nicholas Arthur Joseph, Allen Meredith, Jr. and Arthur Joseph Meredith; great-grandchildren, Mallorie Taylor and Joseph Raad Taylor: and a sister, Carolene Cribb. A member of St. Mary Our Lady of Ransom Catholic Church, she served as president of the Altar Society. Renowned for her culinary skills, especially local cuisine, she soon mastered the difficult recipes of Arthur's Lebanese heritage. Known for her quick wit, her no-nonsense personality, and boundless generosity, she was a formidable bridge player. In her late 50s, she joined the Wedgefield Ladies Golf Club and during her first year of playing golf, she made a hole in one! In the mid 90s, she and Arthur took up residence at the Lakes at Litchfield, where they enjoyed a carefree life. After Arthur's passing, she took a fall and was transferred to the Skilled Nursing Unit for the remainder of her charmed life. The entire staff embraced her with great care and genuine love, which she returned in full measure. The family remains forever grateful to everyone at the Lakes, particularly the nurses and CNAs who have treated her as their own mother all through her lengthy but meaningful decline. We are particularly indebted to Eva Knowlin for the faithful and loving care she showered upon Mama for these last 2 ½ years. A Catholic Mass will be held at three o'clock on Thursday, August 3, 2017, at Saint Mary Our Lady of Ransom Catholic Church. Officiating will be Rev. Father Richard Wilson.
