Georgetown:
Bertha C. Westbury, 86, died Thursday, January 8, 2015, at her residence.
Born March 3, 1928 in Georgetown, Bertha was the daughter of the late Joseph Edward Cooper and Maybell Altman Cooper. She married William "Billy" Woodrow Westbury, who preceded her in death in 1984. Bertha retired from the Dept. of Rehabilitation and began a teaching career at Winyah High School, where she retired in 1988. Later in life, she was reacquainted with Harold MacMillan, who she married in 2010. Together they resided in Georgetown and Alva, Fla during different times of the year.
Bertha held a Master's degree in Education, obtained in 1985, from the University of SC, and two Bachelor of Arts degrees, one in Psychology from Coastal Carolina University (1979), and the other in Philosophy (1980) from the University of SC. She was a long-time member of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, where she was a faithful and active member.
Surviving are: her husband of four years, Harold MacMillan of Alva, Fla.; two sons, Edwin W. Westbury (Pattie) of Summerville and James Stephen Westbury (Vicki) of Anderson; a daughter, Emily Estelle Westbury Paus (Sean) of Smyrna, Tenn.; a brother-in-law, Francis X. Archibald (Joyce) of Hilton Head; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two nieces; and four nephews.
In addition to her parents and first husband, Bertha was preceded in death by: two sisters, Lee C. Benton and Mary C. Archibald; a brother, Edward Durant Cooper; and two nieces, Gabriel Cooper Ragland and Lydia Benton Lankford.
Funeral services will be held at eleven o'clock on Monday morning, January 12, 2015, at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. Dora Gafford. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Sunday evening, January 11, 2015, at the Georgetown Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home from six until eight o'clock.
