Obituary

Betty Sue (Newman) Marshall, 76, of Georgetown, SC, passed away peacefully Tuesday, June 17, 2025, while under hospice care at the home of her son.

Betty's life was defined by a strong commitment to faith and family. She was of the Baptist faith and used her gifts by teaching Sunday school, singing in the choir, and through various other ministries of the church. Betty was known for her southern cooking, and many of her delicious meals were shared with friends. She showed love through sharing a meal, no matter who was hungry. Among Betty's proudest achievements was returning to school in her late 40s to earn an associate's degree in political science. She reentered the work force in 1999 after her children had finished school.

A mother above all else, Betty worked tirelessly to see that her four children had everything they needed and that they felt her love and the love of Jesus Christ.

Born in Bristol, VA to the late Willie and Lorraine (Cross) Newman, Betty was preceded in death by her sisters, Joyce Melson and Linda Potter and brothers, Wayne Newman and Joe Newman.

Betty is survived by her children and grandchildren: Aaron Marshall, Georgetown, SC; Byron Marshall and wife, Christi (Byron Jr., Brooke, and Baylee) all of Johnson City, TN; Gabrielle Marshall (First Lieutenant James Graybeal and wife Bethani of Fort Campbell, KY, and Jessica, Mariah, Zandar, and Jayce Marshall, all of Johnson City) and Zach Marshall and wife, Jennifer (Georgia and Callum) of Georgetown, SC. Betty is also survived by her youngest brother, Jerry Newman and sister-in-law, Sandra of Salem, VA, as well as several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

The family will receive friends at Weaver Funeral Home (Bristol, TN) on Saturday, June 21 at 3:00 PM with a Celebration of Life service in the Weaver Funeral Home chapel at 4:00 PM, with Dr. Jennifer Marshall officiating. Music will be provided by Doc Bonhomie. A graveside service will follow at Weaver Cemetery off Peoples Rd. in Bristol, TN. Serving as pallbearers will be James Graybeal, Byron Marshall Jr., Collin McHenry, Josh Mowrer, Chris Newman, and Joe Newman.

The family wishes to thank the team at Prince George Healthcare Center of Georgetown, SC for their care of Betty over the last two months as well as Crescent Hospice of Murrells Inlet, SC.

The Downtown Chapel of Mayer-Ethridge Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements.
