Obituary

Pawleys Island: Helen Butler Freeman Dargan, age 68, daughter of the late Helen Butler Pegues and Lewis Frampton Freeman, died Monday, July 30 2007, at the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital in Charleston, S.C. She was born October 6, 1938, in Charleston but moved to Georgetown at an early age and grew up there. After graduating from Winyah High School in 1956, she attended Converse College in Spartanburg, S. C., graduating with a B.S. degree in 1960. Later Butler received a Masters Degree from the University of S.C. Her teaching career began in Tampa, Florida, in 1960 with the deaf. Later she taught math in Columbia, S.C. and Georgetown, S.C. She was a very involved lay person at All Saints Church, Pawleys Island, having served on the Calling Committee that launched Bishop Murphy's ministry there. She served on the Vestry many times and is a past Senior Warden. For many years she ran the Bookstore at All Saints. Butler's passions were reading, small groups, worship, and prayer. The Soaking Prayer ministry was one she loved and headed. She also was very involved in praying for and supporting missionaries and recently headed the All Saints Foreign Missions Committee. In earlier years she held numerous offices with the Episcopal Diocese of S.C., including President of the Episcopal Churchwomen, delegate to Triennial Convention three times, and a long time member of the Commission on Ministry. She is survived by: her husband, Perrin Quarles Dargan, Jr.; three children, Helen Dargan Jones and her husband Robert Larsen Jones, Perrin Quarles Dargan, III, and his wife Colleen George Dargan, and Louise Dargan Hughes and her husband Allen Chaplin Hughes. She was most proud of her nine grandchildren Mary Helen, Robert, Amelia and Perrin Jones; Sanders and Annie Dargan; and Chaplin, James, and Joshua Hughes. She is also survived by her stepmother Kent Seignious Freeman, her stepsister and husband Peggy and Bubber Jenkinson, and her stepbrother and wife Edward and Kathy Kelley. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Mayer Funeral Home, Georgetown, S.C. The funeral will be Thursday, August 2, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at All Saints Church, Pawleys Island, S.C. with a reception following the service in the ACTS building at All Saints.
