Georgetown:
Carl Monroe Long, 92, retired Director of Operations for International Paper Company, died Feb. 4, 2005, at National Health Care of Garden City, after a brief illness.
Carl was born in Crossett, Arkansas, a son of the late Riscus Shurman Long and Maude Carter Long. He graduated from Bay High in Panama City, Florida and attended the University of Florida. Carl started working for International Paper Company in 1928 at Camden, Arkansas and retired in Georgetown, South Carolina in 1968. During these fifty years of service, he was assigned to the Moss Point, Mobile, Panama City, Springhill, Bastrop, Pine Bluff, and Natchez facilities along with a tour in the Division Office. He was a member of the Quarter Century Club and the Pine Tree Club. During World War II, he served as a member of the South Carolina Defense Force and worked on Special Projects for IP Container Division in developing a waterproof floating box for surf unloading. Mr. Long married the late Eva H. Long on March 2, 1935.
In the early 1950's, Carl was appointed to the County Board of Education for Georgetown County by Gov. J. Strom Thurmond and Gov. James F. Byrnes. As his interest in education appreciated, he realized that Georgetown had very few places for teachers to live. He and Eva converted their home on Winyah Road to accommodate four additional persons, and it was quickly filled by teachers in the local school system. After he retired, Mr. Long enrolled in the Georgetown Technical School for several classes and served as an instructor.
He was a member of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church and served several terms on the Administrative Board as a member at large. Mr. Long was an early president, chauffer, and tour guide for the "Duncanites", a senior citizens group of the church. He was also a member of the United Methodist Men and his beloved Duncan Men's Bible Class.
As a member of many business and civic clubs, Carl was delighted to be associated with the Georgetown Lions Club, where he received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award. He was a Past Patron of Winyah Chapter #140, Order of the Easter Star and a seventy year member of Winyah Lodge #40, Ancient Freemasons. Mr. Long was a member of Omar Shrine Temple and a volunteer with the local Chamber of Commerce.
Surviving are: a son, Carlos Riscus Long and his wife, Shirley Norris Long, of Uncertain, Tex.; two grandsons, Carlos Riscus Long, Jr. and his wife, Marlene Walker Long of Bristow, Okla. and Mark Monroe Long of Beaverton, Ore.; and four great-grandchildren, Andrew, Anna, Alix, and Austin of Oklahoma.
Memorial services will be three o'clock Friday afternoon, February 11, 2005, in Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Phillip C. Thrailkill.
There will be a reception in the church Family Center immediately following the memorial services.
