Pawley's Island:
Carl Graeber Tolbert, a musician, a teacher, an insurance executive, died Friday, April 1, 2005, at the Lakes at Litchfield. He was 87.
Carl was born September 18, 1917, in Salisbury, N. C., where he was the youngest of seven children. He attended Catawba College and graduated from the University of Michigan School of Music in 1939. He received his MA from the Teachers College at Columbia University in 1940. Mr. Tolbert was the High School Band and Orchestra director in Shreveport, La., where he met and married Katherine Jackson French. He also served in an Army Band in Europe in World War II. In 1952, he joined Mutual of New York Life Insurance Co., which took their family to Atlanta, Columbia, and Mobile. In 1978, he transferred to Europe and they lived in Belgium, England and Germany for 6 years.
Carl and Katherine moved to Pawley's Island in 1981, where they enjoyed living on the golf course at Litchfield Country Club. Carl never lost his love for music and in 1990 he took up the clarinet again and was a soloist and chamber music player in the Minton Music Festival Concerts in Pawley's Island. Carl was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church, where he sang in the Choir and often played his Clarinet during the Sunday morning services.
Carl's family said he will be remembered for his love of music and entertaining and his friendly outgoing manner – he never met a stranger.
Carl's wife Katherine passed away this past November. He is survived by: a son, Carl Tolbert, Jr. of Sarasota, Fla.; a daughter, Kay Buckland and her husband Tad of Bluffton; a sister, Dorothy Rogers of Tampa, Florida; and two grandsons, Dr. Tad Buckland, III and his wife Audrey of Albany, N. Y. and Brian Buckland of Boston, Mass.
Services will be Sunday, April 3, 2005, at four o'clock in Old All Saints Church, Waccamaw at Pawley's Island. Inurnment will follow in the Churchyard.
