Georgetown:
Carlton R. Bourne, Sr., 84, passed away on July 12, 2015, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. He was born on August 17, 1930, in Georgetown, SC, the son of James Sparkman and Janie Davis Bourne. He graduated from Winyah High School in 1947. He received his BA from Clemson in 1952. While there, he was a member of the Pershing Rifles. He also attended Auburn University where he became certified as a guidance counselor.
Carlton served as an officer in the United States Army during the Korean War where he was a tank commander. He was wounded in battle and was awarded the Purple Heart.
He was employed for many years as a guidance counselor at Beck Junior High School, Winyah High School and Georgetown High School. He was a member of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church and was active in the Francis Asbury Sunday School class. He previously served as Chairman of the Administrative Board of the church. Carlton was a member of the Winyah Indigo Society for over 50 years. He was also a member of the local VFW.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Betty Bourne, and his children, Charlie (Sheryl) of Mt. Pleasant, and Sarah Ellen of Georgetown, as well as his grand-children, Grayson, Parker, and Bethany Bourne of Mt. Pleasant. He is also survived by his brother James Sparkman (Sparkie) Bourne, Jr. He was pre-deceased by his brother, Bill Bourne, his sister Elizabeth (Tibba) Ackerman, and his grandson Dawson Bourne.
Carlton loved his family and took great pride in his children and grand-children. He also loved good jokes, amusing stories and making people laugh. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing for over 50 years with his loyal friends Charlie, Blookie, Big Al, James, Claude and Joie.
His funeral service will be Tuesday, July 14th at 11:00 am at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church in Georgetown with burial to follow at Elmwood Cemetery. Visitation will be held in the church parlor at Duncan immediately preceding the service beginning at 10:00 am.
