Georgetown:
Caroline Williams Stevens, 89, of Georgetown, died peacefully Monday, February 10, at Morningside of Georgetown.
Mrs. Stevens was a longtime resident of Georgetown. She was born in Columbia, S.C. on June 29, 1924, to Latimer and Carolyn Williams. She was a member of the first graduating class of Dreher High School and attended the University of South Carolina before marrying Earl Stevens in 1945. During their 61 years of marriage they lived in many places, and along the way she held a number of interesting jobs, including being the first female underwriter for the Travelers Insurance Company in Hartford, Connecticut, and office manager for the General Adjustment Bureau storm office in New Orleans following Hurricane Betsy. She was an active volunteer for many organizations, including the Salvation Army of Georgetown. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the National Society of the Colonial Dames and played a number of roles in her church.
She enjoyed bridge with her friends and was a highly skilled player. She was very artistic and loved doing crafts, first with her children, then later with her grandchildren, and in recent years with her great-grandchildren. She was widely admired for her elegance, charm and hospitality. She was equally known for her swift (and sometimes ferocious) wit and her always amusing take on the absurdities of the world. She will be very greatly missed by her many friends and by her family.
Mrs. Stevens was predeceased by her husband Earl and by three siblings, Latimer and Norman Williams and Evelyn Risher, and is survived by her brother Warrington (Jean) Williams of Hartsville, S.C; two daughters, Carye (Warry) Williams of Kansas City, MO and Elizabeth (Erik) Hildinger of Ann Arbor, MI; three grandchildren, the Rev. Stephen (Stephanie) London of Edmonton, AB, Canada, Mary Caroline Girsch of Dallas, TX, and Martha Girsch of Ann Arbor; and three great-grandchildren, Claire, Sarah, and Alexander London of Edmonton. She also leaves behind many cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews who will remember her fondly.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the capable and caring staff at Morningside of Georgetown for making the last years of her life comfortable. They would also like to thank Tidelands Hospice for their support in her final days.
