Pawleys Island:
Surrounded by her loving family, Catherine Finklea Brockington Way, age 96, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2015 at The Lakes at Litchfield, in Pawleys Island.
Born August 8, 1919 in Hyman, Catherine was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Leonidas Finklea. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Education from Winthrop College and began her first teaching assignment in Andrews, where she met and married C. J. Brockington, Jr. in June, 1943. She taught 4th Grade for 25 years and raised her two children in Andrews until after his death in 1973. Catherine loved teaching and her students adored her. She was preceded in death by a brother, Samuel Leon Finklea and a sister, Esther Finklea DuBose.
On August 11, 1979, Catherine married Dr. Julian Mellette Way (deceased) of Florence. The couple enjoyed 20 years together in Florence where Catherine led an active life deeply rooted in her community. She was a devoted and longtime member of Central United Methodist Church and the Christian Family Sunday School Class. She was also an active member of the Just for Women Bible Study Ministry and the Pearl Jones-Rosa Sanders Women's Circle. Catherine enjoyed traveling, reading, gardening and dancing. She spent much of her time with the Camellia Garden Club, the Terpsichorean Dance Club, and volunteering with Meals on Wheels and various community organizations. She cherished her family and friends, and will be deeply missed.
Catherine is survived by a sister, Charlotte Finklea Munn, a son, C. J. Brockington, III of Pawleys Island; a daughter, Judith B. Gaither and her husband, Thomas K. Gaither, Jr., of Pawleys Island; a step-daughter, Dr. Marianne Rosen and her husband, Richard S. Rosen, of Charleston; two grandsons, Gregory Blair Scurlock, Jr. (wife Stephanie), Roswell, GA and Charles Brian Scurlock (wife Ansley) of Greenville; a granddaughter, Chandler Byrd Bold, of Charleston; six great grandchildren, Pope Scurlock, Tripp Scurlock, Ethan Scurlock, Parker Scurlock, John Bold, and Athena Bold. Extended devoted family members include Mandy Gaither Nottingham (husband, Shawn, two children: McChord & Campbell), of Buford, GA; Jennifer Gaither Ciali (husband, Craig, a child: Jordan) of Nashville, TN; John Rosen (wife Anne), of Charleston.
Catherine will be laid to rest in Andrews Memorial Cemetery in Andrews on Monday, September 14th at 10:00 AM. The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 PM on Sunday, September 13th at The Georgetown Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home. The interment will be followed by a memorial service at Central United Methodist Church in Florence at 3:00 PM. The family will be available from 2:00-2:45 PM in the Church Commons Area prior to the memorial service. Arrangements are being handled by the Georgetown Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home.
