Pawleys Island:
Cecil John Tallevast, Jr., 88, died Monday, December 21, 2009, at his residence.
Mr. Tallevast was born in Andrews on June 29, 1921, a son of the late Cecil John Tallevast, Sr. and Lou Ellen Moyd Tallevast. He later moved to Hamlet, N.C., where he graduated in 1939 from Hamlet High School. In 1943, Mr. Tallevast graduated from Clemson A&M College with a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering. Upon being called to active duty, he served in the European Theater with Gen. Patton's Third Army with the highly decorated 163rd Engineer Combat Battalion from Normandy to Austria. Mr. Tallevast continued to serve in the Army Corps of Engineers as both active and reserve, until he retired as a Lt. Col. after 23 years of service.
Mr. Tallevast was employed with several companies as Engineer and Consulting Engineer until retirement in 1976. He returned to Pawleys Island to build his retirement home on the Waccamaw River and rejoin old friends and family. However, when the Town of Pawleys Island was incorporated, he was requested to organize the Building Inspector Department. He held the Building Inspector position through Hurricane Hugo reconstruction until retirement in 1998. Mr. Tallevast was a member of Pawleys Island Community Church.
Surviving are: his wife of forty-three years, Peggy Daniel Tallevast of Pawleys Island; two daughters, Renee Eileen Tallevast of Edgewater, Fla. and Colette Lou McMurray (Charles) of Sneads Ferry, N.C.; a son-in-law, Steven M. Frazier of Pinehurst, N.C.; a grandson, Sean Alexander Frazier of Belgrade, Mont.; two granddaughters, Kelly Marie McMurray of Raleigh, N.C. and Rebecca Lou Fields (Cory) of Aiken; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Memorial services will be noon Saturday, December 26, 2009, at the Chapel of Pawleys Island Community Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Bob Barrows.

Mr. Tallevast loved his alma mater and stayed in touch with both his high school and college classmates and looked forward to reunions of both in order to reunite his bond with them. He enjoyed his primary hobbies of fishing and hunting and pursued both with zeal.
