Obituary

Weston, Fla.: Charles K. Cheezem, 87, died Friday, August 7, 2009, in Weston, Fla. Mr. Cheezem was born at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma on October 25, 1921, a son of the late William Leroy Cheezem and Eva Moss Cheezem. He grew up in Andrews and graduated from Andrews High School, Class of 1939. While in High School he won the S. C. State Debating Championship. He was a graduate of Clemson College Class of 1944 with a B. S. degree in mechanical engineering. Mr. Cheezem served in the Army during World War II and attained the rank of Captain. He was a recipient of The Purple Heart and was awarded the Bronze Star. After the war he served with the Army Corps of Engineers in the reconstruction of post war Berlin. He worked for DuPont Chemical Company in Aiken for a time. Mr. Cheezem then moved to Florida and started a home building business with a friend that grew to Cheezem Development Corporation, a publicly traded company. The company's projects included SeaTowers at Independence Cove in Madeira Beach, Florida, and Brickell Place in Miami, Florida. Mr. Cheezem was the original developer of Brickell Key in Miami, Florida and pioneered the redevelopment of South Beach with South Pointe Towers in 1985. After selling his controlling interest in Cheezem Development, Mr. Cheezem pursued a variety of developments including Charlestowne in Miami, Country Walk in Clemson and, with his son Michael, Patrick Square in Clemson, South Carolina. Mr. Cheezem was predeceased by his son, Charles Kenneth Cheezem, Jr. Mr. Cheezem is survived by his wife, the former Janis Kestnbaum of Weston, Fla., and four sons, J. Michael Cheezem of St. Petersburg, Fla., David Christopher Cheezem of Palmer, Alaska, Alexander Roy Cheezem of Weston, Fla., and Matthew Wylie Cheezem of Miami, Fla. He is also survived by his brothers, Dr. William L. Cheezem of Marion and Clemson and the Reverend Clyde Burton Cheezem of Moorhead City, N. C. Sign a guest book at www.mayerfuneralhome.com.
