Pawleys Island:
Charles Howell Harris, 78, husband of Dorianne Cosentine Harris, died Friday, June 26, 2020, in Tidelands Waccamaw Community Hospital in Murrells Inlet.
Mr. Harris was born in Brooklyn, NY on June 17, 1942, a son of the late Urton Lancelot Harris and Edith Bible Harris.
He was educated by the Franciscan Brothers from gramma school through college. Our Lady of Good Counsel, St. Francis Prep and St. Francis College were the foundation for his career. Charlie swam at the Prep for the legendary Tom Boras, where they won the CHSAA in 1959 as well as the Catholic H.D. Nationals in Villanova the same year.
Since the college did not have a swimming team in 1959, Charlie and several swim team members from the "Prep" gave Water Polo a try. They won the NCAA Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference three years in a row from 1961 – 1963 and capped off 1962 with the AAU National Jr. Championship at west Point. In addition to being the team Captain in 1962, Charlie was Class President all four years at St. Francis. He was very helpful to Brother George in starting a swim team at Bishop Ford as well as assisting the legendary Swim Coach at Bishop Loughlin H. S., Harry Benvenuto, with his fleding water polo team.
Upon graduation, he began his career as a Math teacher and found time to join the celebrated NYCA water polo team, where over the years he made major contributions by helping the team win seven AAU Indoor Senior National Championships from 1963 through 1978. They participated at two Olympic Trials in 1964 and 1968, but were unsuccessful. From 1962 thru 1968 he was awarded the MVP for the tourney. Along with that honor he also won the MVP at the 1965 and 1975 AAU Senior Nationals, also known as the Current Award. Charlie was on five different AAU All American Teams from 1965 to 1968. In 1967 he was awarded the AAU's Metropolitan association Outstanding Athlete, a very special honor at the time. That was the same year he won the Ameno Award (Captain Robert L.) for the top NYAC water polo player/contributor.
During this period he left teaching and joined the IBM Corporation as a systems engineer. He was recognized for twelve One Hundred Percent Clubs as well as five Golden Circles, IBM's highest Sales award. He became National Marketing Manager for GIS. After twenty three years with IBM, Charlie left the metro area and moved to Denver where he became a principal with a GIS consulting firm. After ten years out west, his business career ended after a short stint with Autodesk as a Vice President in their GIS group in Palo Alto, CA. He married his college sweetheart, Dorianne in 1964. They both enjoy visiting their three sons, Christian his wife Tracey, Grant his wife Windy, and Brian his wife Jamie; five grandchildren, Eva, Quincy, Georgia, Hudson and Chase.
Memorial Services will be planned for a later date due to the Covid-19 virus.
