Pawleys Island Charles Johnston Newkirk, 76, of Hagley, passed away Good Friday, April 2, 2010, at Waccamaw Community Hospital. Mr. Newkirk was born in Memphis, Tenn., he was the son of the late Harold & Elizabeth Newkirk and was predeceased by a sister, Betty Ferguson all of Greenville, Ill., where he was raised. Mr. Newkirk attended the University of Illinois at Carbondale & later served in the US Army guarding the Panama Canal. He was a retired mechanical engineer for Carrier, member of the Georgetown Presbyterian Church, & VFW Post 6444. He was an avid golfer & enjoyed spending time with his children & grandchildren. Mr. Newkirk is survived by his wife, Josephine Schubert Newkirk of Hagley, five children, Nancy & her fiancé Kenneth Watts of Pawleys Island, Charles & his wife Jodi Newkirk of Tulsa, OK, Philip and his late wife Debbie Newkirk of Surfside, Sally & her husband James Monaghan of Mt. Pleasant and John of Panama; Grandchildren Christopher & Ashley of MD, Charles (Chip) & Tiffany of Greenville; Philip, Corey & Tara of Surfside; James & his wife Natalie of Charlotte, Zachary a Junior at The Citadel, & Savannah of Mt. Pleasant; Kenneth's daughter, Emily; the late Stephen Phillips of Charleston; & a niece, Mary Ferguson Quinn & her husband Earl of Bellevue, Ill. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00AM, Wed., April 7, 2010 at Georgetown Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Stephen Wilkins & Rev. Dr. Wm. H. Puckett, Jr. will officiate.
