Georgetown:
Clifford Daniel Cannon, Sr., 87, died Monday, January 7, 2008 at Tidelands Community Hospice in Georgetown, SC.
He was born on the family farm in Florence County on April 19, 1920, the oldest son of Clifford DeVoe Cannon and Pearl Reeves Cannon. After graduation from Hemingway High School in 1938, Mr. Cannon entered Clemson A&M College where he graduated in 1941 with a degree in Agricultural Engineering.
He immediately joined the U.S. Navy and received his commission as an Ensign at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. He served in the European and Pacific Theaters of World War II. His duties included that of Executive Officer of the USS Torrence (KA 76). Mr. Cannon attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander and was honorably discharged in 1945.
After his return from the war, he worked briefly for the Cotton Council and Coker Seed Company before beginning a twenty-eight year career with Tomlinson's Stores. Mr. Cannon was Manager of Tomlinson's Georgetown operation for twenty years before moving to the company's Florence headquarters as President in 1970.
During his tenure in Georgetown, he was a member of the Georgetown Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon and on various committees, including his role as chairman of fund raising for the current church building. His civic involvement included membership in VFW Post #6444, American Legion, Moose Club, Rotary, Georgetown Cotillion Club, and the Winyah Indigo Society. Mr. Cannon was also a past president of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce. He retired to North Litchfield Beach in 1978 and resided there until two years ago when he moved to The Lakes at Litchfield Retirement Community. During his retirement he was an active volunteer at Brookgreen Gardens.
He was preceded in death by: his sister, Sarah Cannon Adkins; and brothers, Robert Newell Cannon and Fred Reeves Cannon.
Dan Cannon is survived by: his wife of fifty-nine years, Jewel; his son, Clifford Daniel Cannon Jr. and his wife, Laurie, of Marietta, Ga.; and grandsons, Clifford Daniel Cannon III and his wife, Rachel, Robert Clayton Cannon; and Kyle Wilson Cannon, all of Marietta, Ga.
Funeral services will be held at eleven o'clock, Wednesday morning, January 9, 2008 at Georgetown Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Stephen Wilkins officiating. Burial will follow at two o'clock in Old Johnsonville Cemetery in Johnsonville.
