Pawley's Island:
Colonel George Stone Saussy, Jr., USMC, Ret'd. passed away Sunday morning, March 27, 2005, after a long illness. He was 83.
Colonel Saussy served on active duty in the United States Marine Corps for 27 years and received numerous awards including "The Distinguished Flying Cross" and The Legion of Merit".
He entered Platoon Leaders Class in 1939 and deployed with the Third Marine Division, Third Tank Battalion, to New Zealand in 1942. He landed at Bouganville and fought as a scout platoon leader. He became a Naval Air Observer and participated in the Guam, Saipan, and Okinawa Operations and was awarded "The Distinguished Flying Cross" and "Air Medal".
After the war, he served aboard the USS Topeka (CL67) as Marine Detachment Commander on China Service.
He later served as Commanding Officer of the first Amtrac Battalion in the defense of the Imjin River during the Korean War.
He subsequently served at Marine Corps Schools in Quantico and at Headquarters Marine Corps.
He returned to South Carolina to complete his Bachelors Degree at the University of S. C. in 1960, and then served as Senior Marine Corps Instructor at the U. S. Army Armor School in Fort Knox, Ky. There he was awarded "The Army Legion of Merit". He also supervised Girl Scout activities at Fort Knox.
Colonel Saussy served two tours with the Joint Command and Control Group of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon.
He retired from the United States Marine Corps in 1967 to Litchfield Beach, where he directed and taught at Winyah Academy for 7 years. He then taught at Waccamaw Middle School for 12 years, where he was twice recognized as "Teacher of the Year". During this time he earned his Masters Degree in Education from the University of S. C.
He was born in Charleston to Florence Perry Saussy and George Stone Saussy, Sr. The family moved to Columbia, where he graduated from Columbia High School and attended the University of S. C. He married Jennie Scarborough Parker of Sumter on July 11, 1942 at Christ Church, Philadelphia, Pa.
Colonel Saussy is survived by: his wife of 62 years, Jennie Parker Saussy; sons, Thornwell Parker Saussy of Georgetown and George S. Saussy, III and daughter-in-law Bonnie Inabinet Saussy of Pawley's Island and their children and grandchildren; siblings, Hampton Perry Saussy of Library, Pa., Florence Saussy Foley of Columbia, and David Lamb Saussy of Savannah, Ga.; and many beloved nieces, nephews, former students, and friends.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, April 3, 2005, at All Saints Church, Waccamaw, Churchyard in Pawley's Island, where Colonel Saussy was active and served as Lay Reader for 30 years.
