Obituary

Pawleys Island: Col. Robert "Bob" Lee Oliver, USAF, Ret., 77, died Sunday, July 4, 2010, at Waccamaw Community Hospital. Col. Oliver was born on October 6, 1932, a son of the late Robert I. Oliver of Murrells Inlet and Bernice D. Oliver, originally of Conway. He grew up in Pawleys Island and Georgetown. Col. Oliver graduated from Winyah High School and The University of South Carolina, where he earned a BS degree in economics and a commission in the US Air Force. Col. Oliver entered the service in May, 1955 and began pilot training. He received his silver pilot wings in July, 1956. During his 26 ½ year career, he rose to the rank of Colonel and became a Command Pilot with over 8000 flying hours. Col. Oliver served in 11 different states, Korea and Vietnam. During the Vietnam conflict, he flew 275 combat sorties in the F-100 super saber fighter bomber and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Col. Oliver's other medals and awards include the Air Medal with 16 Oak Leaf Clusters, Meritorious Service Medal with One Oak Leaf Cluster, Vietnam Service Medal with Three Bronze Stars and Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm. While in the military, he attended Squadron Officer's School, Command and Staff College, The Industrial College of the Armed Forces and the Air War College. Col. Oliver also earned an MBA degree from Southern Illinois University. After retiring from the Air Force, he continued his flying career as a private pilot in his own jointly owned airplane. Col. Oliver was an avid fisherman, hunter and dearly loved flying. After the military, Col. Oliver had a successful 20 year career as a Realtor, where he specialized in the sale of private homes. He served one term as president of the Georgetown County Multiple Listing Service and on several different committees. While living in the Town of Pawleys Island, he was elected to two terms as town councilman. He was responsible for hiring the first police chief for the Town. Col. Oliver was a charter member of St. Paul's, Waccamaw, United Methodist Church. He served four years as the chairman of the Administrative Board, was a lead usher, and served on and was chair of the board of directors of The Grand Strand Pastoral Counseling Service. Col. Oliver is survived by: his wife, Susan Harrison Oliver; three sons, Robert Chapman Oliver (Bobbie), Dr. David Steven Oliver (Rhonda) and Derrick Louis Oliver (Stacy); a daughter, Elizabeth Ann Oliver; a godson, Jacob Emory Adkins; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by: his first wife, Betty Ann Stalvey; and his only sibling, his brother William Louis "Bill" Oliver, III. Sign a guestbook at www.mayerfuneralhome.com.
