Obituary

West Columbia Curtis Leon Stanton was born in Marlboro County, South Carolina, June 10, 1925, to John McLaurin "Mack" Stanton and Elva May Quick Stanton. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1942 at the age of 17 and served throughout War World II in both the European and Pacific theaters. Most of his service was aboard the USS Florence Nightingale, AP-70, a combat assault ship, where he performed duties as coxswain driving Higgins Boats (LCVP) during amphibious beach landings. During the postwar occupation of Japan, he served several months in Kure, Japan, as the port director's coxswain before being discharged and returning to his native South Carolina. Shortly after returning home, he met his future wife, Jessie Levon Jackson, in Bennettsville. SC. They married on June 3, 1947, raised three boys, and were life partners over 68 years. Curtis worked for A&P for 25 years before starting his own business, Stanton Refrigeration. He was a 50-year resident of Georgetown and Pawleys Island but has resided in South Congaree, SC, since 2005. His favorite pastime was fishing which he enjoyed well into his seventies and gardening to his late eighties. Curtis is survived by his wife, three sons: Don (Shirley) of Wilmington, NC; Ron (Karen) of Montgomery, AL; Wayne of West Columbia, SC; and six grandchildren: Amy (Jason), Jeffrey (Nikki), Drew (Eden), Tyler (Allyson), Ryan, and Amber, and nine great grandchildren: Madison, Hannah, Lukas, Matthew, Charlotte, Wren, Bethany, and newest Sophia and Ava. He is also survived by one sister, Jewel "Bunnie" Powers of Darlington, SC. He is predeceased by his parents, six brothers, and one sister. A graveside service will be 1:00 PM at the Pawleys Island Presbyterian Church Cemetery, 9967 Ocean Hwy, Pawleys Island, SC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Compassionate Care Hospice, 455 St. Andrews Road, Columbia, SC 29210, phone 802-731-8110.
