Obituary

Georgetown: Cynthia Kelley Callaway, 89, wife of the late James Martin Callaway, died Tuesday, November 25, 2008, at her home on the Black River. Mrs. Callaway was born in Hartsville, SC on October 27, 1919, the daughter of the late Byrch Grady Kelley and Pauline Newsome Kelley. She was a graduate of Hartsville High School and attended Coker College. Mrs. Callaway worked as a bookkeeper and was a branch manager for Coastal Federal Savings and Loan in Myrtle Beach. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Myrtle Beach, very active in several Bible study groups and Christian women's organizations, and was a charter member of the Chicora Book Club. Mrs. Callaway was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 59 years, James Martin Callaway. Also preceding her in death was her beloved daughter, Cynthia Hope Callaway Moore. Surviving are: her son-in-law, Walter E. "Bill" Moore of the home; three daughters, Kathy Pressley and her husband David of Churchland, N.C., Nancy Morgan and her husband Steve of Jekyll Island, Ga., and Jan Callaway of Marion, S.C.; a son, Oliver C. "O.C." Callaway and his wife Jessica of Hemingway; grandchildren, Bud Forgason, Charity Callaway, Carey Todd, Rachel Todd, Brandon Pressley, Faith Callaway, and Faith Glaze Callaway; great-grandchildren, Jaden Forgason, Junah Shore, Seth Todd, Kyli Todd, and Logan Swails; her babies - the puppies: the late Kringle who loved Ninnie "this much", Kelley, Kricket, Me-Tu, and Khan. Cindy was acutely aware of the needs of others and instilled in her children the desire to seek out and to serve. She was a "Southern jewel" says son, Oliver. While daughter Kathy always introduced herself as "the favorite child", in fact, the favorite child was the one who needed her most at the time. She had boundless energy and Nancy remembers that one of her repeated statements was "Don't procrastinate!" Cindy also had endless projects, many of which she started with much enthusiasm and the daughters finished with not-so-much enthusiasm. One of the things Cindy taught her children was "To have a friend, you must be a friend." and she had many, many dear friends including her precious "Golden Girls" who, Jan says, taught the daughters the importance of all things chocolate. Even as Cindy began to age gracefully, she maintained a great sense of humor. This was never more evident that with her loving caregivers Fannie, Boo, Virginia, Bernetta, Geri, Sheila, Birdie and others. By example, she taught her children to love. She was their best friend and constant source of wisdom, guidance, and recipes. She spoiled all five of her children and trained them all to spoil her back. She was loved and adored, and left a legacy of faith, family, and fun. As much as we miss her, we visualize the glorious reunion of Mom, Dad and Cindy Hope. And because of Mom and Dad's great faith taught to each of us, we know that one day the family circle will once more be complete. A memorial service will be two o'clock Saturday, November 29, 2008, at First Baptist Church of Myrtle Beach. Officiating will be Pastor Nedra Merriman and Pastor Larry Cashatt. Sign a guestbook at www.mayerfuneralhome.com. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall immediately following the memorial service.
