Obituary

Georgetown:

Doris McMeekin Cromartie, 87, widow of Hollis Dale Cromartie, passed away peaceful at her residence on Wednesday afternoon, August 31, 2022, with her girls by her side.

Mrs. Cromartie was born in Columbia on March 23, 1935, a daughter of the late Franklin Robert McMeekin and Mary Kirksey Crawford McMeekin.

Doris graduated from Columbia High School in 1953 and Winthrop College in 1957 with a BS degree in Sociology. She was active in many clubs including President of Y-Teen Inter-Club Council, House President of Bancroft Hall, and Chairman of the Judicial Board, as well as an active Hospice Bereavement Volunteer for many years

After graduation Doris moved to Charleston to begin her career in Social Work. In 1963 she moved to Georgetown with her husband Dale and their children where she became a 6th grade teacher.

Throughout her lifetime, Doris had many interests. She had a lifelong love of dance and theater and participated in many productions. Doris was one of the founding members of the Swamp Fox Players and was President of the Four Seasons Dance Club. Some of her other interests included tending to her flower garden, traveling with friends and relatives, bowling and painting. She was an avid bridge player and had a love of reading. What meant the most to Doris was the time spent with her family and friends.

Mrs. Cromartie is survived by: three daughters, Julie Cromartie Porter (Rob) of Mt. Pleasant, Robin Cromartie Ackary of Charleston and Beth Cromartie Burton (John) of Charleston; five grandchildren, Chelsea Milford (Brad), Amanda Bolatete (Isaiah), Christopher Burton (Annie), Matthew Burton and Brock King; two sisters, Eloise M. Clyburn (David) and Sara Anne Scheisser; three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial Services will be three o'clock Sunday afternoon, September 4, 2022, at Screven Baptist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Jamie Harrelson,

The family will receive friends prior to the service in the Sanctuary of Screven Baptist Church from two until three o'clock.
