Obituary

Columbia: Arthur Allen Madden was the beloved husband of Brandon Vaughan Madden and father of Helen Hefner, Arthur Allen, Jr., Brandon Vaughan and James Emmett. Grandfather to Kelley Vaughan and Arthur Allen, III. Father-in-law of Rebecca Teague Madden and Suzy Parrott Madden, who is carrying his next grand-child. He died on 23 May 2005 after a brief illness. Dr. Madden was born in Columbia, S. C. to Helen Hefner and Dr. Lucius Emmett Madden on 30 March 1933. He began his education at Miss Louly Shand's kindergarten, McMaster Elementary, University High School and Columbia High School. He was graduated from The University of North Carolina in 1955 and The Johns Hopkins University Medical School in 1959. All of his post doctoral training was at Emory University Medical School and Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Ga. Dr. Madden was a Lieut., and then Lt. Commander in the US Navy from 1961-1963, serving as ER physician at Little Creek, Norfolk, Va., and reassigned as chief physician to a destroyer squadron. He entered private practice in Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine with his father. He was also an associate professor at MUSC in Charleston, as well as USC, and then at the USC Medical School. He retired in 1992. Dr. Madden was formerly a member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral and more recently Holy Cross-Faith Memorial Episcopal Church at Pawley's Island, his second home. Burial will be in the Churchyard of All Saints Episcopal Church at Pawley's Island on Thursday, 26 May 2005 at noon. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Tommy Tipton. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Smith Medical Clinic, or "Miss Ruby's Kids," c/o Holy Cross – Faith Memorial, PO Box 990, Pawley's Island, SC 29585, or a favorite charity. Arthur Madden was a child of God, and is now an inheritor of the Kingdom of heaven. The Georgetown Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
