Dr. George Holland Varn, Jr., 87, passed away Thursday, March 14, 2024, at Inlet Costal Resort in Murrells Inlet, SC. ​Dr. Varn was born July 27, 1936, in Moncks Corner, SC. He was the son of Reverend George Holland Varn and Nell Wilson Varn.

George graduated from Marion High School, Wofford College, and the Medical University of South Carolina. He served his internship at the University of Virgina where he met the love of his life, Sue Ellen Bentley.

After UVA, he served two years as a Captain in the US Army with assignments in Okinawa and Vietnam. After a fellowship in internal medicine at MUSC, he moved to Georgetown, SC in 1970 where he practiced internal medicine for 36 years. He was a strong advocate for the hospital staff and cared deeply for the people he worked with and the patients he served.

George was a member of the Winyah Indigo Society for 53 years, enjoyed the outdoors, and he was passionate about fishing and sailing. He was well known for his limitless supply of jokes, and he was ready to share at moment's notice. He loved his family and friends dearly, and he was always happiest when he was with them.

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Sue Bentley Varn; two sons, Mark H. Varn (Amanda) of Mt. Pleasant and Eric B. Varn (Kate) of Pawleys Island; one daughter, Sharon L. Groat (Geoff) of Charleston; six grandchildren, Scott Varn, K Logan Varn, William Varn, Katherine Varn, Eliza Groat, and Suzanne Groat; and two brothers, David W. Varn of North Augusta and William B. (Billy) Varn (Julie) of Hartsville;​ and many nieces and nephews.​

George was preceded in death by his beloved sister-in-law, Nancy Kinder Varn.

The family is grateful to the staff of Inlet Costal Resort, Tidelands Hospital, and Agape Hospice for the wonderful care they provided.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, March 21, 2024, at Duncan United Methodist Church, 901 Highmarket Street, Georgetown, SC 29440, with Rev. Ross Chellis officiating. Burial will follow in the Cemetery at Union United Methodist Church, 8209 Rose Hill Road, Georgetown, SC 29440.  The family will receive friends from 5:00 - 7:00 PM on Wednesday, March 20, 2024 in the Georgetown Chapel of Mayer Ethridge Funeral Home, 222 St. James St., Georgetown, SC 29440.
