Obituary

Georgetown: Dr. James Bowers Marvin, 85, died Friday, May 27, 2005 at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Dr. Marvin was born in Scottdale, Pa. on November 29, 1919, the son of the late John Marvin and Margaret Bowers Marvin. He grew up in Scottdale and attended Grove City College. He served in the Army during W. W. II in the Pacific Theatre. After the war he obtained his Optometry degree from the University of Chicago. Dr. Marvin began his Optometry practice in Georgetown in 1949, which he operated until retirement in 1989. Dr. Marvin was an active member of Georgetown Presbyterian Church and a former choir member. He was also a member of the Georgetown Lions Club, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #6444, and the S. C. Optometric Assn. Dr. Marvin was a Past Master and member of Winyah Lodge #40, AFM. Since the death of his wife, Leila Belk Marvin, in 2000, Dr. Marvin resided at Morningside Assisted Living of Georgetown. He enjoyed his many friends there and appreciated the care and concern from the staff at Morningside. Surviving are: two daughters, Anne M. Derrick and her husband Bob of Georgetown and Julie M. Courtney and her husband Thomas of Charlotte, N. C.; three grandchildren, LeeAnne Derrick and Rob Derrick, both of Georgetown and Kathryn D. Gibson and her husband Joe of Mt. Pleasant; and two great-grandchildren, Robert Truett Gibson and Ellie S. Gibson, both of Mt. Pleasant. Funeral services will be Sunday afternoon, May 29, 2005, at two o'clock in Georgetown Presbyterian Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. E. Thomas Miller. Burial will follow at four-thirty at Lake City Cemetery in Lake City. The family will receive friends in the Parlor of the Church immediately following the funeral services.
