Dr. Robert Edward Graham, Jr., 95, passed away Wednesday, September 29, 2010 in Mt. Pleasant.
Dr. Graham, known to the village as "Mr. Bobby," was born in McClellanville on March 7, 1915, a son of the late Robert Edward Graham and Agnes Morrison Graham, both of McClellanville. In 1936, he graduated from Clemson University with a B.A. in English. Dr. Graham was a Lieutenant in the Cadet Corps and received several academic honors, including the Clemson Key for Excellence in English Literature. He continued his post-graduate studies at the University of Virginia, where he earned his Master's and Doctorate degrees in Economics. Dr. Graham was appointed to the faculty at the University of Virginia in 1941 until he was called to active duty from the U.S. Army Reserves in 1942. Serving in the 10th Army as Lieutenant Colonel in the Pacific Theatre, Graham saw action in Okinawa and participated in the occupation and surrender of Korea. After the war, Dr. Graham joined the U.S. Dept. of Commerce in Washington, DC, where he worked as an economist for 28 years. In 1968, he received the Gold Medal Award for outstanding work in the field of regional economic analysis from Commerce. Dr. Graham retired in 1974 from the Dept. of Commerce as Chief of the Regional Income Division, Office of Business Economics. He then joined the faculty of the University of South Carolina in Columbia, where he taught economics until 1980 and became a member of the Omicron Delta Epsilon Economic Honor Society.
Dr. Graham moved back to his family home on Pinckney Street in McClellanville, serving briefly as the headmaster of Archibald Rutledge Academy, on the Board of Directors of the Village Museum, as an officer in the St. James-Santee Historical Society and as a member of the McClellanville United Methodist Church for many years.
Dr. Graham was preceded in death by his wife, Mazy Comer Graham and a sister, Lyda Griffin Graham. He is survived by: a sister, Frances Graham Holson of Edgefield; two sons, Robert Edward Graham, III (Connie Graham) of McClellanville and Christopher David Graham (Dr. Jessica Pepitone) of Rumford, RI; four grandchildren, Alison Benning Graham of Mt. Pleasant, Stephanie Davison Graham of Helena, AK, Nicholas David Graham of Rome, Italy and Elizabeth Courtney Graham of Atlanta, GA.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 2, 2010, at eleven o'clock at McClellanville United Methodist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. James Harper and the Rev. Walter Cook. Burial will follow in McClellanville United Methodist Cemetery.
