Mr. William Edward “Eddie” Vick, 78, of Murrells Inlet, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, August 31, 2026.
Born on April 27, 1948, in Monroe, North Carolina, Eddie was the son of the late William Edward Vick Jr. and the late Margie Mangum Vick. He was preceded in death by his sister, Judy Gayle Vick.
Eddie is survived by his sister, Vickie Vick Porter, and her husband, Rick, of Liberty Hill, South Carolina; and his nephew, Rich Porter, of Washington, D.C. He is also survived by his dear friend and caregiver, Donna “Smurf” McKinnon; his lifelong friends, Buck Winchester, and his wife, Cindy, Hazel Cauthen, and his wife, Kay; his stepson, Jerimey Holland, whom he loved dearly; his beloved animal friends, Scooter and Miley, and canine companion, the late Saylor; and his extended family at Sara J’s.
Eddie first met Hazel Cauthen in the first grade, and the two became fast friends. Eddie also formed a close friendship with Hazel’s brother, Snooks. As teenagers, Eddie, Hazel, Snooks, and their friends spent time at Hunter’s Auto Body and Towing and at Cauthen Funeral Home, Hazel and Snooks’ family business. Those early friendships and experiences ultimately led Eddie to a lifelong career in the funeral business.
Eddie graduated from Lancaster High School in 1966 and from the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science in 1968. He went on to spend the majority of his career as a Funeral Director, Embalmer, Preneed Counselor, and Certified Crematory Operator at Mayer Funeral Home and, later, Mayer-Ethridge Funeral Home.
Eddie will be remembered for many things: his love of animals, his support of nonprofits serving children, his deep affection for his friends and family, and, above all, his sense of humor. In the days since his passing, his friends have found themselves repeating some of Eddie’s familiar sayings and expressions, including, “Living on Back Street, loving on Main Street,” “What you doing? Nothing?”, and, “Shut ’er down, Newt, she’s pumping mud.”
These words, like Eddie himself, will continue to bring smiles and laughter to those who knew and loved him.
The family will receive guests at Sara J’s Seafood Restaurant, 314 Atlantic Avenue, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 3.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 4, at Mayer-Ethridge Funeral Home’s Maryville Chapel, 2200 South Fraser Street, Georgetown, South Carolina 29440, followed by a graveside service in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Eddie’s memory to St. Frances Animal Center, 125 North Ridge Street, Georgetown, SC 29440, or All4Paws Animal Rescue, 708 Petigru Drive, Pawleys Island, SC 29585.
