Pawleys Island: Edward Atkinson Brandt, 87, died Saturday, July 9, 2011, at Tidelands Hospice House, Georgetown. Born in Erie, PA, he was the son of Forest Wayne and Edna Atkinson Brandt. He was the husband of Barbara Harrison Brandt, whom he married in 1998, having been predeceased by his first wife of 35 years, Barbara Townley Brandt, in 1988. Born in Erie, PA, he was educated in the public schools of Kittanning, PA, Brookville, PA, Buffalo, NY, and Wheeling, WV, and he completed one year of college at Springfield College in Springfield, MA before enlisting in the Army Air Corps during WWII. He served as a navigator/bombardier on a B-26 in the European Theater, flying combat missions from Dijon, France into Germany. Serving his final year in Munich after the war, he was among those selected to attend the Nuremburg Trials of the Nazi War Criminals. After the War, he finished his college education at West Virginia University, receiving his law degree there in 1950. He served as the student representative on the University Athletic Council and was a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, serving as its president his senior year. After law school, he went on to enjoy 3 careers. He entered the FBI, serving for 10 years as an agent, the first year in Tennessee and the remaining 9 years in New York City. The next 20 years he spent with AMF, starting as a marketing manager, during which he served in various capacities, retiring as Director of Marketing in 1980. He then moved to Lake Placid, NY, where he opened his own company, Country Business Services, a business brokerage, which he operated for 18 years before his final retirement in 1998 when he and Mrs. Brandt were married and moved to Pawleys Island. Mr. Brandt was a sports enthusiast, having played various sports in high school and college, and in his later years became an avid participant in tennis and curling. He was instrumental in building a curling rink at the Ardsley Country Club in Westchester County, NY, where he went on to lead his team to 4 New York State championships and to runner-up position in the national championship in 1973. After moving to Lake Placid, he founded the Lake Placid Curling Club which in turn hosted the national championships in 1986. He was instrumental in getting curling into the Winter Olympics as a demonstration sport in 1998, and it has been a competitive Olympic sport ever since. In 1999 at a banquet at Ardsley, the U. S. Curling Association honored him as a foremost curler and builder and presented him, among other gifts, a plaque which listed his many curling achievements. He enjoyed traveling, and in the 13 years of their marriage, he and Mrs. Brandt have traveled extensively throughout this country, this hemisphere, and Europe. He was a member of Pawleys Island Presbyterian Church, the Grand Strand Ex-FBI Agents Association, the B-26 Marauder Historical Society, 17th Bomb Group veterans, and WWII Air Navigators' Association. In addition to his wife, he survived by 4 sons, Edward A. (Nancy), Yorktown Heights, NY, David (Mary), Upper Jay, NY, Andrew, Lake Placid, NY, and James (Jill), Napa, CA, and a daughter, Carole, Seattle, WA. His survivors also include 4 grandchildren, 3 step-children, and 6 step-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 16, at 11:30 a.m. at Pawleys Island Presbyterian Church.
