Andrews: Elfriede "Ellen" Illg Tanner, 86, died Monday, September 3, 2012, at Tidelands Community Hospice House. Mrs. Tanner was born in Stuttgart, Germany on July 29, 1926, a daughter of the late Friedrich and Maria Groetzinger Illg. She served in the German Army during World War II, when she met her late husband, Wade Erskine Tanner, who was an American soldier. Her love for him was so great that she married him and left her family and country to come to America. Mrs. Tanner was a devoted wife and loving mother. She constantly did for others throughout her lifetime. Mrs. Tanner was previously employed by Royce Green Motor Company and the Exchange Bank, and retired from General Telephone Company after 25 years. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where she was President of Forever Young and a member and secretary of the Rachel Rebecca Circle. Mrs. Tanner also served as a Cub Scout den mother. Surviving are: two sons, Siegfried "Siggi" E. Tanner (Patsy) of Columbia and Mark D. Tanner of Andrews; a daughter, Susan T. Beard (Austin) of Andrews; three grandchildren, Wade Austin Beard of Alpharetta, Ga., Shannon Bozard (Jay) and Ashley Foster (Greg), both of Columbia; and two great-grandchildren, Tanner Bozard and Hampton Foster. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Tanner was predeceased by two step-sisters and a step-brother. Funeral services will be at eleven o'clock on Wednesday morning, September 5, 2012, at Trinity United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Andrews Memorial Cemetery.
