Obituary

Elizabeth Carroll Havens, age 81, of Georgetown, SC died January 4, 2026. She was born in Bristol, VA on June 29, 1944, the daughter of the late Robert Neal Havens and Anne Gray Ayers Havens. She was preceded in death by her husband James Elbert Calk.

Betsy is survived by her brothers, Robert Havens and his wife, Vicki of Camden, SC, Towe Havens of Columbia, SC, and Brent Havens and his wife, Nancy of Sullivans Island, SC; and many nieces and nephews.

Betsy was a true Renaissance lady. She began her studies at age 12 at the Telfair Museum of Art in Savannah, GA and studied art throughout her career. Educated at the University of Georgia and the University of South Carolina, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in design with post graduate work in the history of architecture and southern literature.

Betsy was a perfect blend of beauty, creativity, intelligence, and awareness of history. She always brought connections between her beautiful work and the history of mankind, religion, faith, and love. Every time you sat down with Betsy you learned something! She was a lover of intellect and art as seen in her late husband Jim. He was her rock. Betsy's caregivers were wonderful. Melody Bone and her team of Gayle, Emma, and Justice loved her and we are grateful.

Betsy and Jim loved Georgetown and cherished their interactions with friends and visitors up and down Front Street, loving life in their home and studio right where they wanted to be.

Betsy loved God, she dearly loved her Mom and Dad, and was such a wonderful wife and partner to Jim Calk. She loved her friends and will be missed by so many for so many reasons. May God bless Elizabeth Carroll Havens.
