Georgetown:
Ellen St. Clair Smyth Young, 73, passed away March 14, 2015 in Charleston.
Ms. Young was born October 25, 1941 in Greenwood. She grew up on Ashley Hall Plantation in
Charleston and graduated from St. Andrews High School and the College of Charleston. She raised her family in McClellanville and resided in Georgetown and Ridgeland. She retired in 2010 after 35 years of teaching in private and public schools. She taught at McClellanville High School, Archibald
Rutledge Academy, Choppee High School, and Jasper County High School, and finished her career at The Academy for Career Excellence in Ridgeland. She loved all her students and cherished and championed their individuality.
Ms. Young enjoyed spending her leisure time reading books, doing crossword puzzles, watching her dogs and the birds in her backyard swing, shopping, lunches with her dear friend, Annie Deas, and her little glass of wine in the evening. She loved trips to Charleston to visit family and riding through
McClellanville to "cut the village," to reminisce of wonderful days raising her children. She supported
numerous charities, especially Tidelands Hospice, Martha's House, and St. Frances Animal Center, and
helping neighbors whenever she could.
Ms. Young was raised Episcopalian at Old St. Andrews Parish Church in Charleston and loved the traditions of the older churches. She felt that spirituality was a personal experience and relationship with God. She liked different aspects of all denominations and most recently spent her Sundays attending Wayne Methodist Church in Georgetown.
Ms. Young was the daughter of the late Julia Rowell and Newton St. Clair Smyth. She is preceded in death by her dear sister-in-law, Vera Smyth and mother-in-law, Eva G. Curtis. She is survived by her younger brothers, Peter Ogden Smyth and Joseph Baker (Cindy) Smyth, her children, Jaye Ellen (Peter) Cable, James Alva Young, Julia Elizabeth Young, Lee St. Clair (Hugh) Jones, Robert Michael (Lia) Young, three adored grandchildren, Hannah St. Clair and Benjamin Ulrich Cable, and Holden Rutledge Young and a special "adopted" son, Ivan DeOliveria. She is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family in Ohio, all whom she loved dearly, as well. She leaves behind her canine "babies," Mocha and Daisy.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on Sunday, March 22, 2015, at St. James Santee Episcopal Church, 144 Oak Street in McClellanville. Her family will receive friends following the service in the church sanctuary. A reception to celebrate her life will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday following the visitation at Greenfield Plantation, 275 Greenfield Drive, in Georgetown. Family and friends are invited and encouraged to share their stories.
