Obituary

Georgetown: Elsie Waters Ellington, 87, artist and wife of the late J. Burns Ellington, died Thursday, January 3, 2013, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Ellington was born in Florence on April 6, 1925, daughter of the late Cyril A. Waters and Elsie Firesheets Waters. She graduated from Florence High School and Mary Baldwin College in Virginia. Mrs. Ellington studied art at Kansas City Art Institute in Missouri and with William Halseys in Charleston. She received a Master's Degree in Art Education from the University of South Carolina. Mrs. Ellington taught art in Greenville, Kingstree, and Georgetown. She was the first public school art educator in Georgetown and retired in 1989. Mrs. Ellington was a member of the First Baptist Church, First Baptist Historical Society Committee, and a former Primary Dept. Sunday School Teacher. She was also an avid member of the church Three Hundred Year Celebratory Committee and donated an oil painting of the church sanctuary to the church. Mrs. Ellington was a member of the Georgetown Water Color Society, the South Carolina Water Color Society, and the Rice Museum. She was a member and past president of the Arthur Manigault Chapter #63, United Daughters of the Confederacy. Survivors include: a daughter, Livian Hodge-Lyerly of Andrews; a son, John Cyril Ellington of Dallas, Tex,; grandsons, Travis L. White of Georgetown and Khristopher Ellington and Mikeal Ellington, both of Dallas, Tex. Funeral services will be two o'clock Sunday afternoon, January 6, 2013, at First Baptist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. Ted A. Sherrill. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery. Sign a guest book at www.mayerfuneralhome.com.
