Pawleys Island:
Emily Katherine Turner Smith, 48, wife of John Marvin (Mark) Smith, died Wednesday, June 10, 2020, at her Pawleys Island residence after fighting a courageous, year and a half long battle with Glioblastoma. She was born in Greenville, Georgia, on August 11, 1971, the oldest daughter of Judge Stiles Allen Estes and the late Judge David Jasper Turner.
Emily was a 1989 graduate of Flint River Academy in Woodbury, Georgia. She then attended Auburn University where she received a BS in Human Resource Management before earning a master's degree in Personnel and Employee Relations from Georgia State University. She completed her education with a Juris Doctorate from the Walter F. George School of Law serving as Class President. After completing law school, Emily practiced for three years with the firm of Hall, Block, Garland and Meyer in Macon, Georgia. She then returned to her alma mater, Mercer University, as Assistant Vice President for Advancement and Alumni Services. In 2006 she joined her sister's company turnerboone where she was serving as CFO at the time of her death.
To know Emily Smith was to love her. A friend captured her perfectly saying, "her warm, inviting and genuine spirit was evident from her first "hello" and she left a lasting impression of kindness with everyone she met". She had the sweetest smile that warmed your heart making you know that you were of worth and even special. She was so intelligent and took to heart Jesus' commandment to love others.
She was devoted to her husband Mark and considered her two boys, Jack and Cullen, her most precious gifts from God. She brought them up in her beloved Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church insuring they would have life and have it more abundantly.
Emily is predeceased by her father, David Jasper Turner, her father in law, J. Elmer Smith, and her brother Robert George Estes, Sr.
