Georgetown:
Enoch Johnston Meekins, Jr., 96, died Tuesday, January 17, 2017, at his residence.
Mr. Meekins was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and son of the late Enoch Johnston Meekins, Sr. and Ethel Thomas Meekins. He was born December 27, 1920 in Florence. He was one of the last remaining WW II Veterans, having served in the Army Air Corps in the Burma Campaign, India, and China and received the Bronze Star. He was an active member of the American Legion.
Mr. Meekins was a pioneer highway contractor for the State of S.C. for more than 30 years, while working on the State's primary highway system. He was owner of Swain Construction Company in Kingstree and St. Matthews. John was an avid pilot, learning to fly at age 16. He continued to fly throughout his life and flew on his 90th Birthday. His favorite pastime in life was flying his 182 Cessna. He devoted his life to his family, where he was a role model to everyone he met. He loved building and leaving this earth better than he found it.
Remaining are: his wife more than 41 years, Delores Gwen Mitchum Meekins; daughters, Johnette Denise Meekins (Paul Niell) of Tallahassee, Fla., Jennifer Dee Cribb of Surfside Beach, Leslie Dawn Cribb of Murrells Inlet, and Julie Gwenette Harrelson (Calhoun) of Myrtle Beach; sons, Enoch Johnston Meekins, III and David William Meekins, both of Kingstree; a sister, Carolyn Meekins Gharis of Texas; and a grandson, Julian Calhoun Harrelson of Myrtle Beach.
Funeral services will be private.
