Esther Smith Avant, 101, widow of Lennie Dargan Avant, died Wednesday, September 22, 2010. She was born July 11, 1909 in Andrews, the daughter of Rev. James Luther and Minnie Barwick Smith. She graduated from Andrews High School and Greenwood Business School.
Esther retired from International Paper Co., Woodlands Accounting. She then served as a volunteer at Georgetown Memorial Hospital. She was an honorary member of Georgetown Garden Club and enjoyed playing bridge.
She was a member of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church where she served in many areas and sang in the choir. She was a member of the Susanna Wesley Class and the Loula Ford Circle.
She is survived by: two daughters, Judy Avant Antley of Mauldin and Linda Avant Bruorton (Jim) of Simpsonville; four grandchildren, Marcus Antley (Betsy) of Barnwell, Dana Ulmer (Greg) of Simpsonville, Michele Frazier (Jonathan) of Simpsonville and Chip Bruorton (Lindsay) of Mt. Pleasant; ten great-grandchildren, Trey, Will and Dargan Antley, Catherine, Caleb and Claire Ulmer, Jackson and Rylie Frazier and Carver and Lyles Bruorton; two sisters-in-law; and several beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by: one sister, Alma Smith Kizer; and five brothers, Ivan Smith, Woodrow Smith, J.L. Smith, Herman Smith and Garland Smith.

Funeral services will be at three o'clock Saturday at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church with interment following at Andrews Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends from one-thirty until three o'clock at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, 901 Highmarket St., Georgetown, S.C. 29440.
