Obituary

Georgetown: Evelyn H. McMeekin, 86, widow of Dr. Thomas Granger McMeekin, died on March 15, 2005 at the Waccamaw Community Hospital among her close family. She was born October 17, 1918 in Wrens, Georgia, the daughter of Joseph R. and Nell Wren Howard. She was retired from the Georgetown County School system as a teacher at Kensington Elementary School, where she taught the fourth grade from the early 70's until retirement. She also taught at Winyah High School in the early to mid 40's and William C. Bynum Elementary School in the mid 60's to early 70's. She grew up in Wrens, Georgia and graduated from Wrens High School. She went from there to an undergraduate degree in education from Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, Ga. and on to the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga., where she did her graduate work. She was a member of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, where she was very active in the Susanna Wesley Class, the Loula Ford Circle, and the Ducanites. She also taught Sunday School. In addition, she was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. During the summer, she would live in Wrens, where she taught the Dorcas and the Agnes adult classes at Wrens Baptist Church. Survivors include: two sons, Thomas Gary McMeekin and his wife Judy of Surfside Beach and Howard Wren McMeekin and his wife Sharon of Pawley's Island; three grandchildren, Thomas Gabriel McMeekin of Columbia, Hamilton Wren McMeekin of Myrtle Beach, and Jessica Rogers and her husband Robert of Conway; a great-grandson, Robert Lane Rogers of Conway. The funeral will be at two o'clock, Thursday, March 17, 2005, in Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Phillip C. Thrailkill and Father Robert Caswell. Burial will follow in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens. Sign a guest book at www.mayerfuneralhome.com.
