Fred C. Gragg, a native of Georgia and a longtime resident of Mobile, AL, died Friday, October 24 after a brief illness.
He was preceded in death by Louise Burson Gragg and his daughter, Beverly Louise Gragg.
He is survived by his wife, Anne Hammons Gragg, and his daughter, Patricia, of Mobile, AL. He is also survived by his brother, Claude Gragg, and his niece, Sue Ellis, both of Canton, Georgia and many cousins.
He graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Science degree in forestry. His 43 year career with International Paper Company began in Georgetown, South Carolina. In 1964 he moved to Mobile and was given responsibility for all of the company's Woodlands operations in the South. He was elected Vice President of I.P. in 1966 and served in that capacity until 1973, when he moved to New York to direct the company's Industry Affairs program.
He was Past President of the Forest Farmers Association and the Southern Forest Institute. He was also a Fellow and Golden Member of the Society of American Foresters. In 1987 the Fred C. Gragg Nursery, a state-of-the art pine seedling nursery program, was dedicated at Bluff City, Arkansas. In 2000 the nursery celebrated the planting of the billionth seedling. In 2004 he was named the Distinguished Alumnus of the University of Georgia's Warnell School of Forest Resources. He was also a proud member of the Anthony Forest Products Board of Directors (El Dorado, Ark.) and Director Emeritus.
Graveside services will take place in Georgetown, South Carolina at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 28 at Elwood Cemetery Annex. Visitation will be held in Mobile, Alabama at 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 2 at Spring Hill Baptist Church with a memorial service at 3 p.m.
