Pawley's Island:
Fred W. Lyon, 78, died Thursday, October 30, 2003, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Lyon was born February 9, 1925, the son of the late Leland H. Lyon and Alice Hahn Lyon. He was raised in New Rochelle, N. Y. and attended New Rochelle public Schools. He received a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1946.
Mr. Lyon was self-employed as an architect and engineer in New Rochelle until his retirement to South Carolina in 1980. He designed many prominent buildings, including an office and plant for the New York Seven Up Bottling Company, the New Rochelle City Hall, and the New Rochelle Public Library, for which he received an award from the American Institute of Architects. He served on the Planning Boards of the city of New Rochelle and Westchester County, New York, the Board of Trustees of the People's Bank for Savings, and the Board of Trustees of the First Presbyterian Church of New Rochelle. He also rewrote the building code of the city of New Rochelle.
He is survived by: his wife of 52 years, Elizabeth "Betty" Shields Lyon; three sons G. Fred "Geof" Lyon and his wife Celene of Rockport, Mass., Leland "Rudy" Lyon and his wife Diane of Roanoke, Va., and Gregory Lyon and his wife Tara of Mamaroneck, N. Y.; a daughter Elizabeth "Beth" Wheeler and her husband Richard of Little Rock, Ark.; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Monday, November 3, 2003, at eleven o'clock at the Pawley's Island Presbyterian Church.
