Fred Austin Thompson, Jr 80 of Tucson, AZ died Friday, April 4, 2008 after an extended illness.
Born September 21, 1927 in Florence, SC, he was the son of Fred Austin Thompson, Sr and Marie Carter Thompson. He grew up in the small South Carolina towns of Andrews, Trio, and Lake City, and was a graduate of Lake City High School. On June 5, 1947, he married Armatha Stevens, of Loris, SC and spent most of his working life as a resident of York County, VA. Mr. Thompson was employed for over 35 years as an electrician with Newport News Shipbuilding and retired in 1987 to enjoy his family, friends, and garden. In 2003, after over 50 years as a resident of Virginia, Mr. Thompson relocated to Tucson, AZ to be closer to family.
Mr. Thompson was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, James Thompson and sister Rose Marie Weis.
Mr. Thompson is survived by his wife, Armatha Stevens Thompson and four children; a daughter Sandra K. Ramsey and her husband Ernest Ramsey of Tucson, AZ; and sons Fred Austin Thompson, III and his wife Cheryl Thompson of Sykesville, MD; David Ray Thompson of Tucson, AZ and daughter-in law Dee Thompson of Elizabeth City, NC; and Jeffrey Glenn Thompson and his wife Susan Thompson of Newnan, GA. The grandchildren are Jennifer Thompson, Jason Roffinoli, Tanner Ramsey, Ernest Ramsey, Jr, Christi Blankman, Krystalyn Drown, Leora Thompson, Serena Kaylor, Kristin Thompson, Jeffrey Thompson, Jr and Todd Thompson; and three great-grandchildren Jett Thompson, Skyler Thompson, and Dylan Ramsey.
The family will receive friends at the Andrews Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home, Friday evening, April 11, 2008, from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.
Funeral services will be at eleven o'clock Saturday morning, April 12, 2008 at Spring Gulley Baptist Church, Andrews, SC. Officiating will be the Rev. Randy Zurcher. Interment will follow in the Churchyard.
