George Frances Long, 77, husband of Nancy D. Long passed away Wednesday, April 3, 2019, following a brief illness. George was born in Lancaster, Pa on July 13, 1941. He was the son of Bert Long and Dorothy Meek Long. He grew up in Lancaster and graduated from Manheim Township High School and Franklin and Marshall College.
George was active in scouting from an early age and eventually earned the honorable rank of Eagle Scout. The early influence of the Boy Scout Oath, Law and Motto shaped George into the man he became. He was a man of honesty, integrity, and strong character.
He served in the Army National Guard in Pa. from 1962 to 1968. He worked for Pakoil Company, as a manufactures representative for 21 years. Then he acquired the company and served as President and CEO from 1987 until his retirement in 2000.
He and wife Nancy moved to Georgetown, SC after retiring. He then became active in volunteering at St. Francis Animal Center. He joined the Board of Directors at Friendship Place, Inc from 2012 thru 2018.
George was a member of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church where he served on the Mission Committee and as an Usher.
Spending time with his granddaughters, golfing, boating, and world travel were a few of his favorite hobbies in addition to his family time.
Surviving are his wife Nancy D. Long, step-son Christopher Troup of Dallas, TX, step-daughter Melissa Smith of Girard, OH, four adored grandchildren- Taylor & Gabrielle Troup, and Alexander & Brady Smith. Also surviving are brother Bert Long and wife Penny of Lewes, DE, nieces Tammy O'Malley and Heather Bedell of PA.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday morning, April 13, 2019, at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church in Georgetown, SC. Visitation begins at 10:30am in the Church Parlor followed by a service at 11:00am officiated by the Rev. Dr. Dora Gafford. Please join the family immediately following at the Fellowship Hall across the street for light refreshment and reflections of a life well lived.
