Pawley's Island:
The Lord called Georgie Sparks home on Wednesday, November 30, 2005. Georgie was born in Florence, South Carolina on June 17, 1922, the only child of George Brogdon and Eva Lee Brogdon. She attended Florence schools and graduated Valedictorian of her high school class. She received her baccalaureate degree from Coker College and married Ray Sparks on April 17, 1944. They lived in Washington, D.C. for several years where she worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Government Accounting Office.
They started their family and moved to the Maryland suburbs. She worked for eight years as a preschool teacher at St. Matthews School in Hyattsville, Maryland. Georgie loved golf, bowling, sewing and crafts.
Shortly after Ray's retirement from Riggs Bank in Washington, D.C. in 1987, the couple moved to Pawleys Island, South Carolina. There Georgie volunteered for several years at Georgetown Hospital and worked as a teacher's aide at Pawley's Island Elementary School.
Georgie was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She worshipped at the Prince George, Winyah Episcopal Church. She was a loving wife and mother and a friend to all she met. She is greatly missed but her family is consoled knowing that she has been reunited with her Lord and all of the loved ones who have gone before her.
She is survived by her beloved husband of sixty-one years, Raymond E. Sparks of their Pawleys Island home, their three children, Raymond E. "Rick" Sparks of Hollywood, California, George William "Bill" Sparks of Charlotte, North Carolina, Kathy Lee Hajjar of Brookville, Maryland, seven grandchildren, one great-grandson and her dear dogs Poppy and Jake.
A graveside service will take place at 2:00 pm on Saturday, December 3, 2005 at the Prince George, Winyah Episcopal Church Cemetery. Assistant Rector Scott R. Fleischer will officiate, assisted by family friend and retired minister Manney C. Reid.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made in the form of contributions to the charitable organization of your choice. The family is being served by Mayer Funeral Home of Georgetown, South Carolina.
