Obituary

Geraldine Long Jayroe, 83, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 7, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Savannah, GA, a daughter of the late Early Elmer Long and Kathryn (Hewett) Long.

Geraldine had fond memories of growing up in her beloved Georgetown, where she graduated from Winyah High School. She would share many memories of life and carried those with her, from growing up in Maryville to helping family in NC on their farms and spending time on the waterways of Georgetown with her love, Richard Olin Jayroe. She attended Screven Baptist in her youth and raised her family in Herbert Memorial Methodist before becoming a member of her husband's family church, Duncan Memorial. Geraldine sang in the choir for many years and was known for her soprano voice. After marriage she lived with her family at Benvenue Plantation on the Pee Dee River.

Her love of Georgetown extended to all those that she met. She was the owner of Swamp Fox Tours and Benvenue Home in Downtown Historic Georgetown. After retirement, she took great joy in speaking to visitors and always welcoming them into our city. She would always thank those that helped her and had great love for friends and family.

Geraldine is survived by her children, Richard Olin Jayroe, Jr. (Kelly), Christopher Mark Jayroe (Brigitte), Wallace Elmer Jayroe, and Kevin Dean Jayroe; her siblings, Kaye McCain of Oak Hill, OH (Mike), Jane Walden of Richmond Hill, GA (Boyd), James W. Edwards, Jr. of Newberry, SC (Kitten), and Sally Bohnstengal of Mt Pleasant, SC (Bob); grandchildren; and one aunt, Helen Hewett of Summerville, SC.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Early Elmer Long, Jr.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, September 10, 2024, at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, with burial to follow in Elmwood Cemetery. A visitation will follow burial at Kevin's house, 914 Highmarket Street, Georgetown, SC 29440.
