Georgetown:
Geraldine "Jeri" McKenzie Sports, 84, died Thursday, July 25, 2013, at her residence.
Mrs. Sports was born in Georgetown on December 12, 1928, a daughter of the late Charlton Durant McKenzie and Ida Singleton McKenzie. She lived all her life in Georgetown where she attended Winyah High School, Class of 1946. Mrs. Sports was a member of First Baptist Church and the Ruth Sunday School Class, where she was the class Outreach Leader for many years. She taught Sunday School for over thirty years and was active in the Women's Missionary Union of the church.
Mrs. Sports was an avid golfer, instrumental in organizing the Ladies' Golf League at Seagull Golf Club and served as a league officer. She was a former winner of the Ladies Championship Tournament at Seagull and was a member of the winning team in the Walter Hagen Invitational State Championship 1982.
Mrs. Sports was a loving wife and mother and is survived by her husband of 68 years, L. Dudley "Sporty" Sports, Jr. of Georgetown; four daughters, Alicia Jernigan (Jackie) and Angie Paul (Glenn), both of Georgetown, Pam Nelson (John) of McConnells, and Nicki Davis (Richard) of Lexington; a brother, Michael D. McKenzie of James Island; nine grandchildren, Jeff and Justin Jernigan, Brett and Casey Nelson, Randall Cox, Brook and Ashley Paul, Kristen McAlister, and Robert Logan; and five great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Sports was predeceased by: a daughter, Deborah Sports; and a sister, Frances Rae Mehrtens.
Funeral services will be Saturday morning, July 27, 2013, at eleven o'clock at First Baptist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. Ted Sherrill and the Rev. Dr. Bob Teems. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery.
