Obituary

Gregory H, Watkins, 58, of Pawleys Island, died Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at Waccamaw Community Hospital. A celebration of Greg's life will be held for family and friends at the Pawleys Island Tavern on Sunday, April 6, 2008, from 2:00 p.m. through 6:00 p.m. Mayer Funeral Home of Georgetown is in charge of local arrangements. A Memorial Service and Burial will be held in his hometown of Doylestown, Ohio at a later date. Mr. Watkins was born May 26, 1949 in Wadsworth, Ohio, the youngest son of Edward David Watkins (deceased) and Audrey Mae Ritzman Watkins of Doylestown, Ohio. He attended Ohio public schools; the Columbus (Ohio) Institute of Art & Design; with further studies in art in San Francisco and Boston. He relocated to this area 24 years ago after living and working in Ohio, California, Massachusetts and Texas. Since arriving in South Carolina, Mr. Watkins has worked as a self-employed artist, providing the Georgetown/Pawleys Island and Myrtle Beach communities with his beautiful paintings and murals. His art can he seen in many public places, restaurants, residential homes, doctor's offices and attorney's offices throughout these communities. Surviving are: his wife, Debbie Ledford of Georgetown; a step-daughter, L. Noel Thomas of Moncks Corner; two step-sons, Chance Ledford of Seattle, Washington and Nick Altman of Georgetown; two step-grandchildren, Bishop Altman and Madison Altman of North Charleston; his mother, Audrey Watkins Richards of Doylestown, Ohio; two brothers, David J. Watkins and his wife, Margaret, of Doylestown, Ohio, and Dean Edward Watkins, and his wife, Mary, of Cincinnati, Ohio; two step-brothers, Tom Richards and his wife, Jennie, of Doylestown. Ohio and Mike Richards and his wife, Jane, of Bluffton, Ohio; and one step-sister, Rebecca Richards Thornton and her husband, Stephen, of Wooster, Ohio. A web site is being developed to build a digital record of Greg's work over time and to which people can contribute reminiscences or digital images of work they may own.
